Whip your ukulele strumming into shape and be able to strum along with any song. A complete guide to rhythm and strumming for the ukulele.

On my blog, Ukulele Hunt, I get one question more than any other: “What’s the strumming pattern for this?” It was obvious that strumming was an area that many ukulele players weren’t comfortable with. So I wrote this ebook to give you everything you need to know to be confident in your strumming.

The problem is that there isn’t anything out there for the ukulele that gives you the ideas behind strumming patterns so you can work out strums for songs and come up with your own. They just give you a few patterns and leave you to get on with it. My aim with this ebook is to give you the knowledge to understand what’s going on behind the strums so you can play along with any song you choose.

Quick warning: if you’re using iPad/iPhone/Android you can’t download directly to your gadget read this for more info.

Get Your Timing Right

Knowing that a strumming pattern is down, up, up… is a good start, but you need to know how long each of those strums is supposed to last. So I’ve come up with a ukulele-brand based method that will help you get you strumming at the right time. It’s a case of matching up words to the length of the strums. It’s a simple way of doing it but it works great.

Never Be Stuck for a Strumming Pattern

Of course, I’m not going to neglect the strumming patterns themselves. The ebook contains a whole bunch of basic strumming patterns and some advanced ones in the style of ACDC, Nirvana, James Brown, Bo Diddley, The Specials and Bob Marley. There are mp3s of all the patterns (including slow and fast versions of most of them).

Get Your Technique Down

If you ever have problems with your arm getting tired after strumming, or your playing doesn’t sound bright enough, or your strumming sounds a little raggedy, or you can’t get your chnking down; the ebook will help you sort out your technical gremlins. There are videos of the various techniques including basic strums, chnks, muting and triplets.

Who Is It For?

This one is aimed at beginners and improvers who have learnt the basics but feel like there’s something about strumming that they’re just not getting. If you have trouble taking chord charts and matching them up to the song, or you feel like you’re muddling through and winging it a bit; it’ll increase your knowledge and confidence and improve your playing.

Everything is explained really simply, so you don’t need to have any knowledge of musical theory going into the ebook.

If you haven’t downloaded one of my ebooks before, please do check out FAQ for more info.

What Are People Saying About It?

Thorough and thoroughly fantastic book! Thanks as always.

I’m sure my flatmates will be very grateful for it as well. With time, my practicing will (hopefully) sound like actual music rather than the sort of abstract noise that it was before and my flatties can stop voluntarily banning themselves from home until it’s clear that I’ve moved on to another task for the day.

In all seriousness: the book is wonderful, Thorough, easy to understand, and funny (as always). I am completely indebted to you for saving me from the depths of ukulele despair.

- Carrie Griffin

I shall be recommending the ebook to our Monday Ukearist ukers as I know many of them are interested in improving their strumming. I’ll also be unashamedly stealing your mnemonic way of teaching!

- John Hobson

Al’s topped himself this time which I wouldn’t have thought possible after the blues book.

This is a great read for beginners, but there are some strumming patterns at the end that are brilliant and will take some work to get the hang of.

When I started playing four years ago, I had no idea there would be such a great wealth of information available. Al’s books, in my opinion, are better than anything I’ve found elsewhere, as far as written instruction goes. And, he is rather hilarious when he wants to be.

- Lonna Brockway

I’ve already read this ebook more than 6 times and found something new with each read. A very important aspect for me was that the book covered basic things essential for strumming that are left out in other ukulele methods, such as rhythm and time signatures.

The examples and the videos are really helpful and you can even test out your newly acquired sense of rhythm through the exercises.

If there one book to buy on ukulele strumming, then it is definitely this one.

- Armelle

…it’s definitely set up for everyone at any level to learn something new. I get frustrated when teachers take the small bits of knowledge that make a BIG difference to a new student for granted. Al does the opposite by making sure that everything is explained in an accessible way that takes the mystery out.

Al’s teaching is very clear and well illustrated, and I would rec any of his work. I have Chord Progressions too; I will be working through that for awhile as well, there is just so much great information and there’s enough in each lesson to keep me interested and moving forward rather than get me discouraged like other books or authors.

- “Teek” on Ukulele Underground

What Do I Get?

You’ll get a pdf file of the ebook and a pdf of a printable version of the file. You’ll also get mp3s files of all the examples and video files of some of them. They’ll all be in zip files (check out the FAQ page for more info).

This one is slightly different to the way I’ve done it in the past. There are so many mp3s and videos that it made it too big for a single download. So you’ll get the pdf files as a single download (the same as my other ebooks) and the mp3s and videos will be a separate download. The links to all of them will be emailed to you automatically as soon as you buy.

Guarantee

If you check out the ebook and you decide it isn’t for you, let me know within 7 days of purchasing and I’ll give you a full refund. Just email me and let me know the email address you bought it with – you don’t need to give me a reason or anything. If the ebook doesn’t make you a better player, I don’t want your money (because swimming around in it, Scrooge McDuck style, is only fun if you’ve earned it).

How Can I Buy It? And How Much Is It?

To order it click ‘Add to Basket’ and go through the PayPal payment process.

Once you’ve paid, click ‘Complete Purchase’ to be taken to the download page. You’ll also be sent a link to the download page by email. So don’t worry if you miss it.

If you have any questions, leave a comment or send me a message.

Here’s what people are saying about the How to Play Blues Ukulele ebook:

This is a wonderful little tome. I’m not the kind of guy who learns how to play things or do things from books or manuals, I’ve always hated it. Yet I found the experience different when playing with this ebook. I learned to pick out just about everything you had in the ebook quickly and it was fun.

- Todd Mauldin of The Hellbusters

I’ve been teaching myself to play uke, and have to say that it was the music theory that got me stumped when it came to understanding such things as pentatonic blues scales and chord progressions for jamming. Despite the fact that i know some really great musicians, none of them have been able to explain it as clearly as simply as you lay it out in the book. Knowing the basic pattern relative to the root note (and how that works in second and third position too) has opened up a whole new uke world for me, just as i was getting stuck in tried and tested patterns, jigs and reels! It’s like i’ve been playing in black and white till now and suddenly i’m seeing in colour! It couldn’t have been explained better.

- Saul Jaffe

The book is amazing!!! so professional and, even more importantly, so USEFUL! I love the lessons, they’re broken down into manageable chunks, and the MP3s demonstrate everything so clearly! Really, you have done a stellar job.

I play blues (among other things) on uke all the time, but honestly, i have been stuck in a rut with my playing… I sat down and played with your book for just 20 minutes and it opened up all kinds of new ideas for me..such as using the C5 instead of the straight C. now I want to sit down and write some new songs using what i picked up. I can’t wait to get even more into the lessons! very exciting!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am really going to enjoy playing with this!

- Pam Moore AKA Madame Pamita

Of all the written ukulele instruction I have poured through, this stands out above all the others. Every example is worth learning! I can’t bring myself to skim through the pages for fear that I will miss one small tidbit of great information. The mp3 examples are great, especially for picking up a particular rhythm in a selection.

Anyone who plays the ukulele should have a copy of this book.

- Lonna Brockway

Contains tabs for 7 classical tunes arranged for standard tuned ukulele:

Blue Danube – Strauss
Bridal Chorus – Wagner
Elephant – Saint-Saëns
Orpheus in the Underworld – Offenbach
Pizzicato by Delibes
Toreador Song – Bizet

Watch them all here.

The focus is on tunes that you’ll have fun playing and that people will recognise and be impressed by. The focus isn’t on good classical technique or faithful recreations of the original works (in some of them I’ve sythed out the less famous sections). Some of them are tricky to play, some of them are more straight-forward. It’s definitely not for newbies.

You get individual pdf files of each of the tabs along with an ebook with my usual blathering and a few general pointers on playing. It’s not a full on guide to classical technique, more along the lines of the stuff that usually accompanies tabs on here. It’s all delivered digitally.

If you haven’t downloaded one of my ebooks before, please do check out FAQ for more info.

Quick warning: if you’re using iPad/iPhone/Android you can’t download directly to your gadget read this for more info.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy It

You might not want to buy it if:

- You’ve never done any fingerpicking. There’s a variety of difficultly but none of them are suitable for beginners.
- You’re looking to develop classical technique:
- If you play soprano only: Some of the tunes use frets above the 12th.

What If I Get It And It Sucks?

As with all my stuff, if you don’t like it let me know within 7 days (with the email address you used to pay with) and I’ll send you full refund. No questions asked or seething resentment.

How Do I Buy It?

Click the ‘Add to Cart’ button below and hand over your money.

After you pay you’ll be taken to the download page and get it sent to you by email.

I Have A Question

If you have any questions, queries or problems you can email me at ukulelehunt@gmail.com or contact me here.

What people are saying:

There was the nice blend of humor along with the little nuggets of ukulele knowledge that I have come to expect from your books. The bits of history thrown in were great. We’ve been very underexposed over here to the history/National Anthems/idea that we’re not the only people on the planet. As a homeschooling mom, who fights against this very kind of ignorance and who teaches her kids to play the uke, this collection is something I will make use of.

I was able to play through 5 of the anthems last night without much difficulty, and felt quite confident I would be able to get to where I needed to be with these songs with just a little effort.

If you've ever bought a beginner book and still be left with endless questions, this ebook has the answers to 101 questions to fill in all the gaps.

- Learn all the things the beginners books leave out.

- Learn to read ukulele tab, understand musical terms and discover new techniques with mp3 and video examples.

- Links to 50 sites with ukulele chords and tabs.

- Advice on which budget ukulele to buy.

- How to adjust your ukulele and playing technique to improve how it sounds.

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions for full information on file formats and downloading. Quick warning: if you’re using iPad/iPhone/Android you can’t download directly to your gadget read this for more info.

When I’ve been looking through beginners ukulele books, I’ve always been a little frustrated about the things they leave out. They teach you to strum and play a few chords, maybe play a nursery rhyme or too, but leave out so many things. These might not be about physically playing songs on the ukulele, but are essential knowledge for people wanting to get the most out of the ukulele such as which ukulele to buy, how to look after it, the best ways to practice. In particular, books rarely even mention all the ukulele related resources that are online.

Ukulele 101 is intended as kind of a Ukulele Beginners Book 2.0. It fills in the blanks that other books leave.

If you still have a blank after reading the ebook, you’ll get a chance to fix that. As well as a pdf, mp3 files and video (mpg) files, you’ll also get the chance to ask me any question you think should be included in this book but isn’t. It might be a term people use all the time, a difficult chord or chord change, a certain technique, something in this book you didn’t understand. I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to answer it, but I’ll certainly do my best.

If you haven’t downloaded one of my ebooks before, please do check out FAQ for more info.

What people are saying:

I just wanted to say 101 things you need to know about ukulele and rag time ukulele E-books are fantastic and I found them really helpful I love the fact you put links as well for what equipment to use and such and links to ukulele tab sites also.

Vincent Wright

I have to Thank You for the excellent material you provide. As a Newbie it is very difficult andfrustrating to weed out the many learning formats available. Yours is by far one of the best I have come across so far. Your ability to keep it simple and organized in a manner to absorb even by a blockhead like myself is testament to your offerings.

Here’s what people are saying about How to Play Ukulele Chord Progressions:

“This is the first time someone’s explained basic chord formation and scales and transposition in a way that makes sense to me”
Mike Dickison writer of Kiwi Ukulele

I started using the book – it’s great!!! This is really a helpful and friendly guide.
Jen Kwok

I am really glad I bought your chord progression theory book. You did just a great job! I am taking piano from my daughter’s classical teacher. He is great but somewhat hardcore classical. He tried to explain some of the theory to me, but I think that your book is way more accessible and directly applicable. And this comes from me, someone who has taken theory classes in the past!
Carol Seigal

“Your ‘How to play ukulele chord progressions’ is excellent. It cleared up a number of things for me. I’m just getting into music theory and having something that relates directly to the ukulele was very useful.”
Chris Double

The “How to Play Ukulele Chord Progressions” was great. I got a better sense of hamonized chords, and their fretboard relationship. The feelings the sounds generate for different chords, and how the tension is built and released really made sense.

This ebook is key to understanding chord relationships, and I can take my music to whole new levels.
Terry Truhart

The chord progression book is really great! It answered many questions I have had, and some that I didn’t even know to ask.
Dave Masinick

This is fabulous, you got nothing to worry about re: competiton or duplication in “The Fretboard Roadmaps” book, if anything your book will help me with understanding THAT.

Thanks so much, it’s brilliant, especially for people like me who have really only done a little self study (except for the mandatory music appreciation in college) and need some help in seeing how it all comes together. You make the most sense to me of anything so far, I appreciate having someone explain how it works. I’ve only been studying a bit since I got into ukes about 3 months ago and have learned more in 45 minutes that in all my previous years just fooling around trying to learn a bunch of chords.

VERY cool.

There usually comes a point on Christmas afternoon – particularly if you got a new uke – when one relative, usually the one who spent most of the rest of the year complaining about your incessant strumming, will pipe up and say, “Play something Christmas-y, then.”

So, while everyone else is sat around nursing swollen bellies, you have to get up and perform. What are you going to play?

In this ebook you get eleven traditional Christmas tunes. I’ve kept the arrangements as simple as I could (with fancy fingerpicking kept to a minimum) in the hope that it will still be possible to knock them out in that woozy, slightly tipsy Christmas afternoon state. I’ve also included arrangements of the

The tunes included are:

Deck the Halls
God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
Good King Wenceslas: Two versions one rocky and one more traditional
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Here We Come A-Wassailing
Chris of The UkeCast.

Just have to say again that your “How to Play Christmas Ukulele” is really terrific. There is a fair amount of ukulele Christmas music out there but very little as good as your arrangements. All of your music is very easy to play as well a lot of fun to play.
Art Crocker

The selection of songs is great. There are popular favorites, along with some that I’d never heard of before. All are arranged for beginner to intermediate. I’m definitely in the beginner camp, but have been able to play a few bars of each… this eBook is a bargain.
