I’m a big fan of daddystovepipe’s bluesy ukulele playing. Such a big fan I talked him into letting me include his fingerpicking blues ebook in the How to Play Ukulele collection.

The ebook makes a great follow-up to How to Play Blues Ukulele. It takes the scale, chords and licks from that ebook, puts them in context of songs and tunes and gives them new twists. I’ve learnt a bunch of tasty blues licks from his arrangements which have spiced up my blues playing and sparked off a ton of ideas for me as well as adding new tunes to my repertoire.

It contains tab (in gCEA tuning) for 6 songs. Each tune has a YouTube video performance and tutorial video (also on YouTube) to go along with it.

The tabs are:

- Macon Rag
- Somebody Loves Me
- Stagolee
- Ragged and Dirty
- Hesitation Blues
- Bootleg Rum Dum Blues

You can watch all the performances and tutorials in this playlist.

It is different from the usual ebooks. Most obviously because I didn’t write it. Also, it is only tabs. There’s no separate performance notes beyond those in the YouTube videos.

As always, there’s a full, no questions asked guarantee. If you get it and you want your money back, just email me within a week of buying with your PalPal email address and I’ll make sure you get a full refund.

For People Who Haven’t Bought One of My eBooks Before

Here’s what happens. Once you click ‘Buy Now’ you’re taken to the basket page. Click the PayPal button and you’ll be taken to PayPal where you can by credit/debit card (click ‘Continue’ in the left hand column) or with your PayPal account. The whole payment process is handled by PayPal so neither me nor any nefarious web-based ne’er-do-wells will be able to get your credit card info.

Once you’ve paid, click ‘Complete Purchase’ and you’ll be taken straight to the download page where you can download your ebook. You’ll also be sent an email with the download info on as well.

You’ll download a zip file (which most computers should be able to do without installing any new software) and inside that will be a pdf with links to all the videos and tutorials, and also a folder containing individual pdfs for each tab. To read pdf files you can use Adobe Reader (which comes installed on most PCs or you can download it free here) or Preview on the Mac.

If you have any questions or concerns shoot me a message here.

Whip your ukulele strumming into shape and be able to strum along with any song. A complete guide to rhythm and strumming for the ukulele.

On my blog, Ukulele Hunt, I get one question more than any other: “What’s the strumming pattern for this?” It was obvious that strumming was an area that many ukulele players weren’t comfortable with. So I wrote this ebook to give you everything you need to know to be confident in your strumming.

The problem is that there isn’t anything out there for the ukulele that gives you the ideas behind strumming patterns so you can work out strums for songs and come up with your own. They just give you a few patterns and leave you to get on with it. My aim with this ebook is to give you the knowledge to understand what’s going on behind the strums so you can play along with any song you choose.

Get Your Timing Right

Knowing that a strumming pattern is down, up, up… is a good start, but you need to know how long each of those strums is supposed to last. So I’ve come up with a ukulele-brand based method that will help you get you strumming at the right time. It’s a case of matching up words to the length of the strums. It’s a simple way of doing it but it works great.

Never Be Stuck for a Strumming Pattern

Of course, I’m not going to neglect the strumming patterns themselves. The ebook contains a whole bunch of basic strumming patterns and some advanced ones in the style of ACDC, Nirvana, James Brown, Bo Diddley, The Specials and Bob Marley. There are mp3s of all the patterns (including slow and fast versions of most of them).

Get Your Technique Down

If you ever have problems with your arm getting tired after strumming, or your playing doesn’t sound bright enough, or your strumming sounds a little raggedy, or you can’t get your chnking down; the ebook will help you sort out your technical gremlins. There are videos of the various techniques including basic strums, chnks, muting and triplets.

Who Is It For?

This one is aimed at beginners and improvers who have learnt the basics but feel like there’s something about strumming that they’re just not getting. If you have trouble taking chord charts and matching them up to the song, or you feel like you’re muddling through and winging it a bit; it’ll increase your knowledge and confidence and improve your playing.

Everything is explained really simply, so you don’t need to have any knowledge of musical theory going into the ebook.

What Are People Saying About It?

Thorough and thoroughly fantastic book! Thanks as always.

I’m sure my flatmates will be very grateful for it as well. With time, my practicing will (hopefully) sound like actual music rather than the sort of abstract noise that it was before and my flatties can stop voluntarily banning themselves from home until it’s clear that I’ve moved on to another task for the day.

In all seriousness: the book is wonderful, Thorough, easy to understand, and funny (as always). I am completely indebted to you for saving me from the depths of ukulele despair.

- Carrie Griffin

I shall be recommending the ebook to our Monday Ukearist ukers as I know many of them are interested in improving their strumming. I’ll also be unashamedly stealing your mnemonic way of teaching!

- John Hobson

Al’s topped himself this time which I wouldn’t have thought possible after the blues book.

This is a great read for beginners, but there are some strumming patterns at the end that are brilliant and will take some work to get the hang of.

When I started playing four years ago, I had no idea there would be such a great wealth of information available. Al’s books, in my opinion, are better than anything I’ve found elsewhere, as far as written instruction goes. And, he is rather hilarious when he wants to be.

- Lonna Brockway

I’ve already read this ebook more than 6 times and found something new with each read. A very important aspect for me was that the book covered basic things essential for strumming that are left out in other ukulele methods, such as rhythm and time signatures.

The examples and the videos are really helpful and you can even test out your newly acquired sense of rhythm through the exercises.

If there one book to buy on ukulele strumming, then it is definitely this one.

- Armelle

…it’s definitely set up for everyone at any level to learn something new. I get frustrated when teachers take the small bits of knowledge that make a BIG difference to a new student for granted. Al does the opposite by making sure that everything is explained in an accessible way that takes the mystery out.

Al’s teaching is very clear and well illustrated, and I would rec any of his work. I have Chord Progressions too; I will be working through that for awhile as well, there is just so much great information and there’s enough in each lesson to keep me interested and moving forward rather than get me discouraged like other books or authors.

- “Teek” on Ukulele Underground

What Do I Get?

You’ll get a pdf file of the ebook and a pdf of a printable version of the file. You’ll also get mp3s files and WMV video files. They’ll all be in zip files (check out the FAQ page for more info).

This one is slightly different to the way I’ve done it in the past. There are so many mp3s and videos that it made it too big for a single download. So you’ll get the pdf files as a single download (the same as my other ebooks) and the mp3s and videos will be a separate download. The links to all of them will be emailed to you automatically as soon as you buy.

Guarantee

If you check out the ebook and you decide it isn’t for you, let me know within 7 days of purchasing and I’ll give you a full refund. Just email me and let me know the email address you bought it with – you don’t need to give me a reason or anything. If the ebook doesn’t make you a better player, I don’t want your money (because swimming around in it, Scrooge McDuck style, is only fun if you’ve earned it).

How Can I Buy It? And How Much Is It?

To order it click ‘Add to Basket’ and go through the PayPal payment process.

Once you’ve paid, click ‘Complete Purchase’ to be taken to the download page. You’ll also be sent a link to the download page by email. So don’t worry if you miss it.

If you have any questions, leave a comment or send me a message.

Get to grips with the latest trend in uke playing: slide ukulele.

Using a slide on the ukulele seems to be a trend of late. Just in the last few months I’ve seen videos of it used by James Hill, Tomotaka Matsui (of the Sweet Hollywiians), Peter Madcat Ruth and plenty of other people. And it’s not hard to see why. It’s a lot of fun to do, you can pick up a guitar slide very cheap from almost any music shop (or on eBay) and, once you’ve got the basics under your belt, it’s a very intuitive and natural way to play.

The only problem is there aren’t any materials out there for people to learn it. So I’ve put together a mini-ebook outlining the tricks and techniques for slide playing with videos, photos, tabs and mp3s.

It’s focussed on the lap style of playing (that James Hill and Tomotaka Matsui are using) but, since I’m assuming you don’t have one of the world’s three Beltona lap steel ukuleles, it’s geared towards doing it on a standard ukulele (and re-entrant tuning).

Here are a few of the longer examples from the book:

Blues Flavored Tune

MP3

Blues Riff

MP3

Island Flavored Tune

MP3

The ebook focuses on techniques more than tabs, so it’s not really suitable for people who are new to the ukulele. I had in mind that it would be good for people who had read my blues ukulele ebook (or who were familiar with that sort of thing) and wanted to start playing around with the slide and improvising with it.

If you haven’t bought one of my ebooks before, check out my FAQ page to find out the process. If you have any other questions you need answering, you can contact me here.

Ukuleles for Peace is one of the most deserving charities around. It was set up by Israeli ukulelist Paul Moore to bring together Jewish and Arab children into a ukulele orchestra to play together, make friends and build links between the communities that stretch far beyond the group itself. You can find out more about Ukuleles for Peace in this video (and part 2 here).

To keep the project going and expanding, they need funding to provide ukuleles, kazoos and other accoutrements and that’s why the net’s best ukulele tabbers have got together to create an ebook with all the proceeds going directly to Ukuleles for Peace.

When you buy the ebook, you’ll get arrangements and tabs of 16 pieces from James Hill, Mark Kailana Nelson (writer of Fingerstyle Solos for Ukulele), Dominator, Brian Hefferan, Ken Middleton, Wilfried Welti and Woodshed. All tabs come with an MP3 including an exclusive MP3 from James Hill.

To give you some idea of what you’ll be able to play, this is the final piece tabbed in the book which combines a number of the ideas contained in the ebook.

Here’s what people are saying about the How to Play Blues Ukulele ebook:

This is a wonderful little tome. I’m not the kind of guy who learns how to play things or do things from books or manuals, I’ve always hated it. Yet I found the experience different when playing with this ebook. I learned to pick out just about everything you had in the ebook quickly and it was fun.

- Todd Mauldin of The Hellbusters

I’ve been teaching myself to play uke, and have to say that it was the music theory that got me stumped when it came to understanding such things as pentatonic blues scales and chord progressions for jamming. Despite the fact that i know some really great musicians, none of them have been able to explain it as clearly as simply as you lay it out in the book. Knowing the basic pattern relative to the root note (and how that works in second and third position too) has opened up a whole new uke world for me, just as i was getting stuck in tried and tested patterns, jigs and reels! It’s like i’ve been playing in black and white till now and suddenly i’m seeing in colour! It couldn’t have been explained better.

- Saul Jaffe

The book is amazing!!! so professional and, even more importantly, so USEFUL! I love the lessons, they’re broken down into manageable chunks, and the MP3s demonstrate everything so clearly! Really, you have done a stellar job.

I play blues (among other things) on uke all the time, but honestly, i have been stuck in a rut with my playing… I sat down and played with your book for just 20 minutes and it opened up all kinds of new ideas for me..such as using the C5 instead of the straight C. now I want to sit down and write some new songs using what i picked up. I can’t wait to get even more into the lessons! very exciting!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am really going to enjoy playing with this!

- Pam Moore AKA Madame Pamita

Of all the written ukulele instruction I have poured through, this stands out above all the others. Every example is worth learning! I can’t bring myself to skim through the pages for fear that I will miss one small tidbit of great information. The mp3 examples are great, especially for picking up a particular rhythm in a selection.

Anyone who plays the ukulele should have a copy of this book.

What people are saying:

There was the nice blend of humor along with the little nuggets of ukulele knowledge that I have come to expect from your books. The bits of history thrown in were great. We’ve been very underexposed over here to the history/National Anthems/idea that we’re not the only people on the planet. As a homeschooling mom, who fights against this very kind of ignorance and who teaches her kids to play the uke, this collection is something I will make use of.

I was able to play through 5 of the anthems last night without much difficulty, and felt quite confident I would be able to get to where I needed to be with these songs with just a little effort.

If you've ever bought a beginner book and still be left with endless questions, this ebook has the answers to 101 questions to fill in all the gaps.

- Learn all the things the beginners books leave out.

- Learn to read ukulele tab, understand musical terms and discover new techniques with mp3 and video examples.

- Links to 50 sites with ukulele chords and tabs.

- Advice on which budget ukulele to buy.

- How to adjust your ukulele and playing technique to improve how it sounds.

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions for full information on file formats and downloading.

When I’ve been looking through beginners ukulele books, I’ve always been a little frustrated about the things they leave out. They teach you to strum and play a few chords, maybe play a nursery rhyme or too, but leave out so many things. These might not be about physically playing songs on the ukulele, but are essential knowledge for people wanting to get the most out of the ukulele such as which ukulele to buy, how to look after it, the best ways to practice. In particular, books rarely even mention all the ukulele related resources that are online.

Ukulele 101 is intended as kind of a Ukulele Beginners Book 2.0. It fills in the blanks that other books leave.

If you still have a blank after reading the ebook, you’ll get a chance to fix that. As well as a pdf, mp3 files and video (mpg) files, you’ll also get the chance to ask me any question you think should be included in this book but isn’t. It might be a term people use all the time, a difficult chord or chord change, a certain technique, something in this book you didn’t understand. I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to answer it, but I’ll certainly do my best.

What people are saying:

I just wanted to say 101 things you need to know about ukulele and rag time ukulele E-books are fantastic and I found them really helpful I love the fact you put links as well for what equipment to use and such and links to ukulele tab sites also.

Vincent Wright

I have to Thank You for the excellent material you provide. As a Newbie it is very difficult andfrustrating to weed out the many learning formats available. Yours is by far one of the best I have come across so far. Your ability to keep it simple and organized in a manner to absorb even by a blockhead like myself is testament to your offerings.

Here’s what people are saying about How to Play Ukulele Chord Progressions:

“This is the first time someone’s explained basic chord formation and scales and transposition in a way that makes sense to me”
Mike Dickison writer of Kiwi Ukulele

I started using the book – it’s great!!! This is really a helpful and friendly guide.
Jen Kwok

I am really glad I bought your chord progression theory book. You did just a great job! I am taking piano from my daughter’s classical teacher. He is great but somewhat hardcore classical. He tried to explain some of the theory to me, but I think that your book is way more accessible and directly applicable. And this comes from me, someone who has taken theory classes in the past!
Carol Seigal

“Your ‘How to play ukulele chord progressions’ is excellent. It cleared up a number of things for me. I’m just getting into music theory and having something that relates directly to the ukulele was very useful.”
Chris Double

The “How to Play Ukulele Chord Progressions” was great. I got a better sense of hamonized chords, and their fretboard relationship. The feelings the sounds generate for different chords, and how the tension is built and released really made sense.

This ebook is key to understanding chord relationships, and I can take my music to whole new levels.
Terry Truhart

The chord progression book is really great! It answered many questions I have had, and some that I didn’t even know to ask.
Dave Masinick

This is fabulous, you got nothing to worry about re: competiton or duplication in “The Fretboard Roadmaps” book, if anything your book will help me with understanding THAT.

Thanks so much, it’s brilliant, especially for people like me who have really only done a little self study (except for the mandatory music appreciation in college) and need some help in seeing how it all comes together. You make the most sense to me of anything so far, I appreciate having someone explain how it works. I’ve only been studying a bit since I got into ukes about 3 months ago and have learned more in 45 minutes that in all my previous years just fooling around trying to learn a bunch of chords.

VERY cool.

Download the mp3 of 12th Street Rag

“I’m really enjoying your rag book.”
John Kavanagh who also recommended it in his article about ragtime ukulele on Ukulele Yes!.

What you get:

- PDF file examining the elements of ragtime including tab examples (with mp3s)
- PDF files of tab for each tune.
- MIDI files of each tune.

All to often, challenging pieces of music can sound like technical exercise, be dull to play and put your audience to sleep. Ragtime music, on the other hand, is full hooks, skips and runs that are fun to play and entertaining to hear. Just playing these tunes around the house, I’ve noticed how people react to ragtime tunes. They’ll wander into the room, start grinning and doing a little comedy-dance routine, or they’ll burst into the room and say, “That’s that one off that film. I like that one. Play it again.”

Download the mp3 of Tiger Rag

There’s something about ragtime music that makes people smile. There’s no wonder that it became the most popular music of its day, has had repeated revivals and remains popular today.

These arrangements are challenging. It’s only fair to warn you, they’re not suitable for beginners.

Download the mp3 of The Easy Winners

You will get a zip file containing:

- Pdf files of all pieces in standard notation and tablature.

- A pdf containing performance notes for each piece, an in depth analysis of the ragtime style and a short history of ragtime.

- Audio examples midi and mp3.

If you are unsure if your computer can use these files, download our test file. When you click ‘Complete Purchase’ you’ll be taken to a page where you can download your ebook (download time will vary depending on your connection speed). You’ll also receive an email with a link to the download page.
